Replacement headliners are all the rage this week – and Public Enemy will now top the bill on the Friday night at Birmingham’s Mostly Jazz Funk & Soul Festival.
The legendary American hip hop act will step up to the plate to replace The Sugarhill Gang & Furious Five ft Melle Mel & Scorpio, who have been forced to pull out due to illness.
Public Enemy will headline the opening night of the festival, which runs from July 10-12 at Moseley Park in Moseley, just two miles south of Birmingham city centre. They will be joined on the Friday by another seminal hip hop artist The Pharcyde, with the first day line-up completed by Soil & Pimp Sessions, The Milk, The Mouse Outfit ft Dr. Syntax & Sparkz, Namiwa Jazz, Free School, Boom Operators, Kioko, Amy Fitz Doyley and Lumi HD.
The Midland’s own rising soul singer Mahalia has also been added to the festival bill for the Sunday (July 12). The rest of the weekend’s line-up will stay the same, with Saturday, curated and compered by BBC 6 Music DJ Craig Charles, headed up by Roy Ayers, while Gregory Porter closes the festival on the Sunday.
Saturday night will also see classic 1990s venue the Moseley Dance Centre brought back to life for a special festival after party, hosting a Northern Soul all nighter with the likes of Craig Charles, Neil Rushton and Billy Chill Fingers on the decks. Tickets are £15 and available to festival ticket holders only.
