A Northern Soul and Motown bar thought to be the first of its kind in the UK for decades is set to launch in Birmingham with two all-nighters in mid-July.
The Night Owl on Lower Trinity Street in Digbeth is the brainchild of superfan Richard Priest and business investor Arith Liyanage.
The venue, which is reported to feature a sprung wooden dancefloor and a ‘modern spin on vintage interiors’, throws its doors to the public with a Northern Soul All Nighter on Friday July 17.
The event will feature DJs Dave Evison (Wigan Casino) and Clive Jones (Locarno) amongst others, playing ‘pure Northern Soul on original vinyl only’, and runs from 9pm to 6am.
A Mostly Motown Party, promising soul classics, 60s R&B, funk and ska from DJs including Sonny & Spare and Jo Prinsen is scheduled for 8pm-2am on Saturday July 18 – followed by Late Night Disco until 6am.
“There are already a lot of great clubs and bars in Birmingham but very few places that are ‘cool’ catering for a slightly older crowd.” said co-owner Arith Liyanage. We see a Northern Soul venue fitting well into Digbeth and Birmingham. It’s a retro, cool and exciting scene, that will draw clubbers who may recall the scene from their youth. We also hope to draw in a new younger crowd looking for a break from the mainstream dance scene.”
A wide range of events such as all-dayers, under 18s events and live music are planned for the venue.
Tickets for the opening weekend are on sale now via www.theticketsellers.co.uk.
