News: Boat to Row Curate New Folk Night, Nocturne

Whimsical folk five-piece Boat to Row have announced the details of a new night of live music taking place at Cafe ORT in Balsall Heath. The event, entitled Nocturne, will be a co-promotion with the Urban Fox folk club and will aim to champion the local folk scene as well as introducing talented musicians from further afield.

In what they hope to make a regular series of live music events, Michael King of Boat to Row said of the night:

“The idea behind Nocturne is partly for us support some of the talented musicans and bands we bump into when we tour but also to have the chance to grow a night, from scratch, into a staple event for music lovers. We all appreciate and understand the DIY ethos that goes into starting a night like this and it’s great to be able to see something that is totally your own vision come to life.

“The venue, Cafe Ort in Balshall Heath, is a lovely spot for the kind of feel we’re looking to create, it’s very intimate and natural. Anna had the idea of ‘Nocturne’ (loosely meaning, music that is inspired by the night), which for us conjured up this beautiful imagery and vision, so much so that we’ve actually used the name for our label, Nocturne Records.

“Having the chance to put on bands is such a nice feeling, especially when they’re friends already. Our first instalment features Birmingham’s Oh! Stockholm and Steady Hands and Chelthenham’s Andy Oliveri, bands that we love! We’re currently planning our next event set for March, so if anyone is interested, please get in touch.”

The first night of Nocturne takes place on Friday, January 17 and will feature live music from wistful four-piece storytellers Oh Stockholm!, Cheltenham singer songwriter Andy Oliveri and ‘junk pop’ act Steady Hands, the ensemble of Birmingham songwriter and composer, Josh Herring.

Entry to Nocturne is priced at £5 and doors are at 8pm. Find out more on the Cafe ORT website or via the Facebook Event.
